Teaching a dog to come when called is mostly a task of NOT teaching the dog to NOT come when called! Never let your dog run loose and expect her to come to you when you're calling her away from her fun--that just teaches her not to come! Never call a dog to you and then do anything she doesn't like. She'll learn that only a stupid dog would come to you! Never chase a dog. You never want to put the idea in her head that she even COULD run from you. In everything you do, get her in the habit of moving TOWARD you. (Never runaway and neverpick it up that is where the dog will run and that is where you will have to chase it so NEVER PICK UP!)
When you want to work on teaching a "Come" command, make sure she
will have no choice but to come to you. Have her on a leash or a long line.
Do a lot of practicing this way. When she does get to you, praise her, then
give her some other sort of reward, depending on what she likes. It could be
petting, a game, or you could have treats hidden in your pocket and whip one
out to give her AFTER she has come to you and AFTER you have praised
her. Do not show her the treat in advance. Doing
that makes the food lose its power to help you motivate your dog, because it
becomes just a bribe.
